Zero-Knowledge Encryption: Why It Matters for Your Clients

Zero-knowledge encryption ensures that even Filvacy cannot read your documents. Here is how it works and why it is the standard for professionals handling sensitive data.

When you send a document to an ordinary cloud provider, that provider can technically read your files. Zero-knowledge encryption changes everything: data is encrypted on your device before being sent, with a key that only you hold.

How it works

At Filvacy, each organization has a cryptographic key pair (public / private). The private key is encrypted with your password — it never leaves your device in plain text. Documents are encrypted with the organization's public key before upload, and can only be decrypted with the private key.

Why it matters for professionals

  • Law 25, GDPR, PIPEDA compliance: you can demonstrate data is inaccessible even in case of a breach
  • Limited liability: a leak at your provider does not expose your clients
  • Client trust: you can assert that no one else has access to the documents
  • Professional secrecy: essential for lawyers, notaries, doctors

The limitation to know

Zero-knowledge has a cost: if you lose your password, documents are unrecoverable. That is why Filvacy allows you to designate a trusted officer who can reset your access in an emergency.

Recommendation: always designate an officer in your organization. It is your safety net in case of lost access.
